Wives as pickets in East End no rent strike. What is stated to be the largest
Wives as pickets in East End no rent strike.
What is stated to be the largest rent strike ever known in the East End of London, has been declared by over 240 families at Quinn Square Buildings, Russia Lane, Bethnal Green. Wives have been picketing the estate office, while men and women watched the gates of the buildings to make sure no one played the race.
The tenants decided that unless rent for decontrolled tenants was altered to range from 5s to 15s and controlled tenants paid only their correct controlled rent, all money due to the landlord should be withheld.
Photo shows, a woman picket prepared to spend the day outside the estate office at Quin Square Buildings.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This powerful print captures a historic moment in the East End of London during the 1930s. It showcases the determination and resilience of over 240 families who declared what is believed to be the largest rent strike ever known in this area. The image depicts a woman picket, ready to spend her day outside the estate office at Quinn Square Buildings. In an effort to fight for fair housing conditions, these courageous wives took on the role of pickets while their fellow men and women stood guard at the gates, ensuring that no one undermined their cause. Their demand was clear: they wanted decontrolled tenants' rent to range from 5s to 15s, while controlled tenants should only pay their correct controlled rent. Until these changes were implemented, all money owed to the landlord would be withheld. This photograph serves as a reminder of both social unrest and unity within communities facing adversity. It reflects not only living conditions but also highlights how ordinary individuals can come together to challenge injustice. As we observe this snapshot frozen in time, it prompts us to reflect on our own roles in advocating for fairness and equality today.
