Us-Cassini-Jupiter
These color composite frames released by NASA 22 January 2001 of the mid-section of Jupiter were of narrow angle images acquired on 31 December 2000, one day after the Cassini spacecrafts closest approach to the planet. The smallest features in these frames are roughly ~ 60 kilometers. The left is natural color, composited to yield the color that Jupiter would have if seen by the naked eye. The right frame is composed of 3 images: two were taken through narrow band filters centered on regions of the spectrum where the gaseous methane in Jupiters atmosphere absorbs light, and the third was taken in a red continuum region of the spectrum, where Jupiter has no absorptions. The combination yields an image whose colors denote the height of the clouds. Red regions are deep water clouds, bright blue regions are high haze (like the blue covering the Great Red Spot). Small, intensely bright white spots are energetic lightning storms which have penetrated high into the atmosphere where there is no opportunity for absorption of light: these high cloud systems reflect all light equally. The darkest blue regions -- for example, the long linear regions which border the northern part of the equatorial zone, are the very deep `hot spots, seen in earlier images, from which Jovian thermal emission is free to escape to space. This is the first time that global images of Jupiter in all the methane and attendant continuum filters have been acquired by a spacecraft. From images like these, the stratigraphy of Jupiters dynamic atmosphere will be determined. AFP PHOTO/NASA/JPL/University of Arizona / AFP PHOTO / NASA

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning print captures the mesmerizing mid-section of Jupiter, showcasing its vibrant colors and intricate cloud formations. Released by NASA on January 22,2001, these color composite frames were taken by the Cassini spacecraft just one day after its closest approach to the gas giant. The left frame presents a natural color composition, providing us with an approximation of how Jupiter would appear to the naked eye. On the right frame, a combination of three images reveals fascinating details about Jovian clouds and atmospheric phenomena. Two narrow band filters centered on methane absorption regions highlight areas where gaseous methane in Jupiter's atmosphere absorbs light. The third image was captured in a red continuum region without absorptions. The resulting composite image unveils a captivating array of colors that indicate different cloud heights. Deep water clouds are represented by striking red regions while bright blue hues signify high haze similar to that covering the famous Great Red Spot. Intensely bright white spots denote energetic lightning storms that have penetrated deep into Jupiter's atmosphere where light absorption is minimal. Notably, this is the first time such comprehensive global images of Jupiter have been acquired using various methane and continuum filters aboard a spacecraft. Scientists hope that analyzing images like these will help unravel the complex stratigraphy of Jupiter's dynamic atmosphere. (Photo credit: AFP PHOTO/NASA/JPL/University of Arizona)
