Capri, c. 1845. Creator: Jean Achille Benouville (French, 1815-1891)
Capri, c. 1845. Located in the Mediterrean Sea, south of Rome, the island of Capri has been famous since Roman times for its spectacular scenery and mild climate. In the 19th century it became the home of many European nobles, and attracted artists from across the continent. Here Benouville captured the beauty of the islands rocky coastline, focusing his attention on a path leading toward the city of Capri and past the rocky outcropping of Monte Solaro. Fascinated by the Italian landscape, Benouville spent years in Italy drawing and painting the countryside. From 1838 to 1845 he made at least three trips there, and in 1845, after winning the Prix de Rome-a fellowship allowing promising artists to study in that city-spent much of the next 25 years in Italy. Although trained to paint landscapes in a very formal manner, after leaving France Benouville began to paint his subjects with a much more personal, nontraditional approach. This may account for this pictures unusual composition, in which much of the canvas is given to indistinct, but beautifully painted stone, sky, and water

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print of Capri, taken around 1845 by Jean Achille Benouville, transports us to the enchanting island located in the Mediterranean Sea. Known for its breathtaking landscapes and pleasant climate since Roman times, Capri became a haven for European nobles and artists alike during the 19th century. In this particular artwork, Benouville skillfully captures the beauty of Capri's rocky coastline, drawing our attention to a path that leads towards the city itself while passing by the majestic Monte Solaro. Benouville's fascination with Italy's natural scenery led him to spend several years in the country, immersing himself in its countryside through drawings and paintings. After winning the prestigious Prix de Rome fellowship in 1845, he dedicated much of his next quarter-century to studying and creating art in Italy. While trained in formal landscape painting techniques, Benouville began adopting a more personal and unconventional approach after leaving France. This shift is evident in this picture's composition: instead of focusing solely on specific elements or landmarks, he devotes significant portions of canvas space to beautifully rendered but indistinct stone formations as well as sky and water. This remarkable print from Heritage Art/Heritage Images not only showcases Benouville's artistic evolution but also offers viewers an exquisite glimpse into Capri's timeless allure.
