EDITORS COMMENTS
Transported to the charming streets of Truro, Cornwall in the late 19th century, this print captures Lemon Street in all its historical glory. Taken around 1890 by renowned photographer Arthur William Jordan, the image offers a glimpse into a bygone era. As we peer up Lemon Street, our eyes are drawn towards the Richard Lander monument majestically standing on the horizon. The three men on the left stand atop Lemon Street bridge, overlooking the tranquil river Kenwyn below. Just out of frame to their left lies Lemon Quay bustling with activity. Intriguingly, a carriage and its liveried driver patiently await their next journey beside an elegant lamp post at the center of this snapshot. On one corner stands John Julian and Company - auctioneers, house agents, and valuers - whose premises unfortunately met their demise in a devastating fire just three years after this photograph was taken. This remarkable visual artifact not only transports us back in time but also serves as a testament to Truro's rich history and architectural heritage. Preserved within these frames is an invaluable piece of Cornish culture that continues to captivate viewers today.
