EDITORS COMMENTS
Front Cover, Festival of Empire: The Pageant of London (May to October 1911 at the Crystal Palace, SE London, 1911) This evocative front cover image captures the spirit of patriotism and pageantry that defined the Festival of Empire: The Pageant of London, held in the historic Crystal Palace in Southeast London between May and October of 1911. The Pageant was a grand celebration of Britain's rich history and imperial might, attended by an estimated two million people. At the center of the image, a galloping horse and its rider, dressed in full medieval knight's armor, proudly carry the Union Jack flag. The horse's reins are adorned with fleurs-de-lis, a symbol of the House of France and later adopted as a symbol of the British monarchy. In the background, a crowd of onlookers, some clad in period costumes, watch in awe as the knight passes by. The image is filled with other symbols of British heritage and power. A coat of arms, complete with a crown and sixpence (6d) piece, is emblazoned on the cover. The spear held by the knight represents the chivalry and martial prowess of the British people. The Pageant of London was a time when the British people came together to celebrate their shared history and the strength of their empire. This image serves as a powerful reminder of the patriotic fervor that defined the early 20th century in Britain.
