Wolseley motor launch, 1913. Creator: Kirk & Sons of Cowes

Wolseley motor launch, 1914. The Wolseley Motors company, a British motor vehicle manufacturer founded in early 1901 by Vickers, also built marine power-units for a variety of watercraft. At first engines for launches were made in partnership with the well-known manufacturers, the Teddington Launch Works, to supply the launches. Demand for marine engines grew and Wolseley also designed and manufactured engines for hydroplanes, cruisers, passenger ferries and lifeboats. Many of the larger vessels were built by S. E. Saunders Ltd. at Cowes, Isle-of-Wight

This print showcases a Wolseley motor launch from 1913, created by Kirk & Sons of Cowes. The Wolseley Motors company, renowned for its British motor vehicles, expanded its expertise to include marine power-units for various watercraft during the early 1900s. Initially collaborating with the esteemed Teddington Launch Works, they supplied engines for launches. However, as demand surged, Wolseley ventured into designing and manufacturing engines for hydroplanes, cruisers, passenger ferries, and lifeboats. The photograph captures the starboard bow view of this elegant motor launch cruising through the picturesque waters of The Solent in England. Its sleek hull glides effortlessly through the waves while showcasing the perfect fusion of automotive engineering and maritime craftsmanship. Built by S. E. Saunders Ltd. , based in Cowes on the Isle of Wight – a renowned shipbuilding hub – this vessel exemplifies both style and functionality. With Arthur Henry Kirk at the helm of this project alongside Edgar WP Kirk and William Umpleby Kirk's contributions to engine design and construction respectively; their collaboration has resulted in an exceptional piece of transportation history.
