Wolseley motor launch under way, 1913. Creator: Kirk & Sons of Cowes

Wolseley motor launch under way, 1913. The Wolseley Motors company, a British motor vehicle manufacturer founded in early 1901 by Vickers, also built marine power-units for a variety of watercraft. At first engines for launches were made in partnership with the well-known manufacturers, the Teddington Launch Works, to supply the launches. Demand for marine engines grew and Wolseley also designed and manufactured engines for hydroplanes, cruisers, passenger ferries and lifeboats. Many of the larger vessels were built by S. E. Saunders Ltd. at Cowes, Isle-of-Wight

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a Wolseley motor launch in action, dating back to 1913. Created by Kirk & Sons of Cowes, this image showcases the expertise of the British motor vehicle manufacturer, Wolseley Motors. Originally established in 1901 by Vickers, they expanded their repertoire to include marine power-units for various watercraft. In collaboration with the renowned Teddington Launch Works, Wolseley initially produced engines for launches to meet growing demand. However, as their reputation flourished, they ventured into designing and manufacturing engines for hydroplanes, cruisers, passenger ferries, and lifeboats. Notably, S. E. Saunders Ltd. , based in Cowes on the Isle of Wight played a significant role in constructing many larger vessels. The photograph beautifully portrays the sleek hull of the motor launch as it glides through The Solent waters off England's coast. It is a testament to both engineering prowess and aesthetic appeal that defined early 20th-century transportation. With its monochrome charm and intricate details captured by Arthur Henry Kirk or Edgar WP Kirk (the exact photographer remains unclear), this print offers a glimpse into an era when road transport seamlessly merged with water transport. As you admire this piece of history preserved through time at Heritage Images' collection—remember not to mention commercial use—let your imagination wander back to an age where pleasure boats like these were symbols of elegance and adventure on both land and sea.
