Siege of Delhi, Indian Mutiny, September 1857 (c1895)
Siege of Delhi, Indian Mutiny, September 1857 (c1895). Engineers blowing up the Cashmere Gate so that British soldiers commanded by Colonel Campbell could pass into the city. The Indian Mutiny was an uprising against British rule in India which began in 1857. The mutiny had many underlying causes, but was sparked by the introduction of cartridges which were greased with animal fat. This outraged both Muslim and Hindu soldiers (sepoys), who made up the majority of the Indian army at the time. Although the mutiny was defeated in 1859, it led to the administration of India passing from the East India Company to the Crown. The capture of Delhi from the mutineers was vital to the British due to the citys symbolic importance as the seat of Indias Mughal rulers

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a pivotal moment during the Siege of Delhi, Indian Mutiny in September 1857. British soldiers, under the command of Colonel Campbell, are seen advancing into the city after engineers successfully blew up the Cashmere Gate. The Indian Mutiny was an uprising against British rule in India that began due to various underlying causes but was sparked by the introduction of cartridges greased with animal fat, which deeply offended both Muslim and Hindu sepoys (soldiers). The capture of Delhi from the mutineers held immense significance for the British as it symbolized their triumph over India's Mughal rulers. This event ultimately led to the transfer of India's administration from the East India Company to direct control by the Crown. In this striking wood engraving, we witness military personnel strategically tunneling through enemy defenses as they launch their attack on Delhi. The image showcases soldiers dressed in traditional Indian attire alongside British soldiers donning their military uniforms. This powerful visual encapsulates not only a significant historical event but also represents themes such as imperialism, rebellion, and warfare. It serves as a reminder of how conflicts shaped nations and altered power dynamics during this tumultuous period in history.
