EDITORS COMMENTS
"This photograph takes us back to 1963, to the very first Air Scout Gliding Course held at Lasham Airfield in Hampshire, England. In the foreground, two young Air Scouts eagerly await their turn to take to the skies in a Slingsby T.21 glider. The excitement is palpable as they sit snugly in the cockpit, helmets on and harnesses fastened. The third Scout, focused and determined, connects the glider to the launch cable, ready to propel these teenagers into their first taste of flight. In the background, an Avro York, registration number G-ANTK, stands proudly, a testament to the rich aviation history of the United Kingdom. The Avro York, a versatile aircraft used for various roles during the 1940s and 1950s, now serves as a static exhibit, providing a stark contrast to the dynamic scene unfolding in the foreground. The Air Scout Gliding Association was established to provide young people with the opportunity to experience the thrill of aviation and learn essential life skills. This photograph encapsulates the essence of this mission, as these teenagers embark on their journey to becoming pilots, learning the fundamentals of flying and teamwork in a fun and safe environment. As we gaze at this image, we are transported back to the 1960s, a time of innovation, adventure, and the spirit of exploration. The Scout Association's commitment to providing children and teenagers with unique and enriching experiences continues to this day, inspiring the next generation to reach new heights and broaden their horizons."
