EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a poignant moment during the First World War, as Lady Diana Manners (later Cooper), Nurse White, and Nurse Manley gather in the foyer of The Rutland Hospital in London. Established by the Duchess of Rutland, Violet, in her own home during the war, the military hospital provided essential care to wounded soldiers. Lady Diana, who had previously nursed at Guy's Hospital, is seen here in her uniform, her expression thoughtful and determined. The Duchess, a talented artist, offers a unique incentive to those who could afford to contribute financially to the hospital. In exchange for their support, she would paint their portraits, as seen in this photograph. The Duchess, dressed in elegant attire, sits regally in a chair, her painting supplies at the ready. Her daughter, Lady Diana, and the two nurses surround her, their faces reflecting a sense of duty and compassion. The image encapsulates the spirit of the upper classes during the war, as they used their resources and talents to support the military effort and provide care for the wounded. The year is 1918, and the end of the war is in sight. Yet, the sacrifices and hardships endured by the soldiers and their families continue to resonate. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the resilience and generosity of the British people during a time of great adversity.
