This striking print depicts the renowned French military commander, Marshal Louis-Nicolas Davout (1770-1823), also known as the "Hero of Austria" and "Mauvian." Born on February 13, 1770, in Maizières-l'Évêque, Champagne, Davout rose through the ranks of the French military to become one of Napoleon Bonaparte's most trusted and capable commanders. Davout's military career began in 1787 when he joined the Royal Dragoons. He distinguished himself in the Italian campaigns of 1796 and 1797, and was promoted to the rank of general in 1800. Davout's greatest achievements came during the War of the Fifth Coalition in 1805, where he led the French forces to victory at the Battle of Austerlitz, and later in the War of the Sixth Coalition, where he successfully defended the city of Dresden against the Allied forces in 1813. Despite his loyalty to Napoleon, Davout survived the fall of the Napoleonic regime and served under the Bourbon Restoration. He was appointed Marshal of France in 1814 and continued to serve in the French military until his death on March 1, 1823. This print captures the intensity and determination of one of the greatest military commanders in French history. Davout's legacy extends beyond the battlefield, as he is also known for his contributions to military education and the development of the French military system.
