1770 1823 Marechal Nicolas Davout

EDITORS COMMENTS
Louis Nicolas Davout, Prince of Eckmühl (1770-1823), was a prominent French military commander and maréchal de France during the Napoleonic Wars. Born in Thionville, Lorraine, Davout's military career began in 1789 when he joined the French army as a volunteer. He quickly rose through the ranks, distinguishing himself in several battles during the French Revolution and the subsequent wars under Napoleon Bonaparte. In the early years of the Napoleonic Wars, Davout served as a division commander in Italy and Egypt, where he gained a reputation for his tactical prowess and leadership abilities. He was particularly notable for his victory at the Battle of Marengo in 1800, where he turned the tide of the battle and secured a French victory against the Austrian and Piedmontese forces. Davout's military success continued throughout the Napoleonic Wars, and he was rewarded with numerous promotions and titles. In 1804, he was made a maréchal de France, the highest military rank in the French Empire. He went on to command the French armies in Germany, Poland, and Russia, earning the nickname "The Iron Marshal" for his unyielding determination and tenacity on the battlefield. Despite his military successes, Davout's loyalty to Napoleon wavered during the Hundred Days Campaign in 1815, when he initially refused to join the emperor in his attempt to regain the throne of France. However, he eventually changed his mind and fought alongside Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo. After Napoleon's defeat, Davout went into exile in Russia, where he spent the remainder of his days. This photograph captures the image of Louis Nicolas Davout, Prince of Eckmühl, in his later years. The portrait conveys a sense of dignity and authority, reflecting the esteem in which he was held by his contemporaries as a brilliant military commander and a key figure in French history.
