Athenian Athens Marathon Miltiades
EDITORS COMMENTS
Miltiades of Athens, the Brave Military Commander at the Battle of Marathon (BC 490) This print depicts Miltiades of Athens, a renowned military commander, leading his Athenian soldiers into battle against the invading Persian army at Marathon in 490 BC. The historical significance of this event is immeasurable, as it marked the first time the Greeks successfully repelled a Persian invasion, paving the way for the eventual defeat of Xerxes I's larger army at Plataea in 479 BC. Miltiades, a native of Athens, had already proven himself as a capable military leader in the early stages of the Persian Wars. His strategic acumen and unwavering determination were instrumental in the Greeks' victory at Marathon. The battle took place near the small town of Marathon, north of Athens, where the Athenian forces, numbering around 10,000, faced an army of around 20,000 Persian soldiers. Despite the odds being heavily stacked against them, Miltiades and his men fought valiantly, ultimately defeating the Persians. The most famous account of the battle comes from the historian Herodotus, who recounts that a herald was sent to Athens to announce the victory, but instead of stopping to rest, the runner, named Phidippides, continued all the way to Athens to deliver the news in person. This legendary run, known as the 'Marathon Run,' is commemorated to this day in the modern Olympic Games. This powerful image of Miltiades, with his resolute expression and raised sword, serves as a testament to the courage and determination of the ancient Athenians and their leader. The Battle of Marathon is a pivotal moment in history, and this print offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, allowing us to connect with the heroes and events that shaped the world we live in today.
