EDITORS COMMENTS
The Rosetta Stone, a fragment of a black granite stele inscribed with a decree of Ptolemy V Epiphanes, is one of the most famous ancient artifacts in the world. Dated to 196 BC during the Ptolemaic Era in Egypt, this magnificent piece of history is currently housed at the British Museum in London, United Kingdom. The Rosetta Stone is unique due to its trilingual inscription, which is written in three scripts: Ancient Greek, Egyptian Hieroglyphs, and Demotic. The Demotic scripture, visible in this detail image, is the most readable and was used for administrative purposes during the Late Period of Ancient Egypt. Ptolemy V Epiphanes, the Greek ruler of Egypt, had this decree inscribed on the stele to ensure the continuity of his rule and the maintenance of the traditional Egyptian religion. The decree granted various privileges to the Egyptian priesthood and confirmed the status of the temple of Ptah at Memphis. This fragment, which measures approximately 111 cm by 76 cm, was discovered in 1799 near the town of Rashid (Rosetta), on the Nile Delta. Its discovery revolutionized the study of ancient Egyptian civilization, as the decree provided scholars with the key to deciphering the ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs. The Rosetta Stone is a testament to the rich cultural heritage of ancient Egypt and a reminder of the interconnectedness of the ancient Mediterranean world.
