EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning print, Plate 20 from Edward Donovan's seminal work "Insects of India," showcases two exquisite species of the Papilionidae family, the Common Mormon (Papilio polytes) and the Blue Mormon (Papilio polymnestor). Donovan, an accomplished Scottish naturalist and artist, created this work during his tenure as the official entomologist to the East India Company in India from 1811 to 1838. The Common Mormon, depicted on the left, is a vibrant and colorful butterfly with a wingspan of up to 10 centimeters. The upper surface of its wings features a striking pattern of black, orange, and white, while the underside is a mottled brown. This butterfly is native to the Indian subcontinent and is commonly found in open grasslands and gardens. The Blue Mormon, shown on the right, is equally impressive with its iridescent blue wings, which can appear almost violet or green depending on the angle of light. This butterfly, with a wingspan of up to 9 centimeters, is also native to the Indian subcontinent and is often found in wooded areas and gardens. Donovan's meticulous attention to detail is evident in this print, which captures the intricate patterns and colors of these beautiful creatures. His work was groundbreaking in its time, providing a detailed record of the insects of India and contributing significantly to the scientific understanding of Lepidoptera in Asia. This print is a testament to Donovan's skill as both a naturalist and an artist, and continues to captivate and inspire viewers today.
