Neck and shoulder arteries, 1825 artwork
Neck and shoulder arteries (red). Dissection showing the right carotid arteries of the neck, and the right subclavian artery of the shoulder. The largest artery here is the right common carotid artery. Smaller arteries branching off these two supply the chest, neck, and head with oxygenated blood. This anatomical artwork is plate 216 from volume 4 of Manuel d anatomie descriptive du corps humain (1825). This 5-volume anatomy atlas was produced by French physician and surgeon Jules Germain Cloquet (1790-1883). The illustrations were by Haincelin. EDITORS COMMENTS
This 19th-century artwork, titled "Neck and Shoulder Arteries" offers a remarkable glimpse into the intricate network of blood vessels that supply oxygenated blood to the chest, neck, and head. Created in 1825 by French physician Jules Germain Cloquet and illustrated by Haincelin, this detailed dissection showcases the right carotid arteries of the neck and the right subclavian artery of the shoulder. At its center lies the prominent right common carotid artery, from which smaller branches extend like delicate tree limbs. These smaller arteries play a vital role in nourishing various regions of our body with life-sustaining oxygen. The meticulous attention to detail in this anatomical artwork highlights both scientific accuracy and artistic finesse. Plate 216 from volume 4 of Manuel d'anatomie descriptive du corps humain serves as an invaluable resource for understanding the circulatory system's anatomy during that era. This comprehensive five-volume atlas delves into various aspects of human anatomy, with volume 4 dedicated specifically to illustrating the intricacies of our circulatory and respiratory systems. As we gaze upon this historical masterpiece today, we are transported back to a time when medical knowledge was being meticulously documented through artistry. It is a testament to humanity's ceaseless curiosity about our own bodies' inner workings—a quest that continues even now as we strive for better health outcomes through scientific advancements.
