Aylesbury Estate Walworth JLP01_09_761948
Aylesbury Estate, Walworth, Southwark, Greater London. Looking over low-rise blocks of flats and maisonettes during the topping out ceremony of the Southwark Whites contract on the Aylesbury Estate.
The Southwark Whites contract was carried out by Laings South London Region. In an article published in October 1976 in Laings monthly newsletter Team Spirit, the site is described as the last housing development to be built by Laing in the 10 year redevelopment of the Aylesbury Estate. It was also to be the last housing development to be built using the 12M Jespersen scheme as the John Laing Concrete factories had all closed and the trend in the country was now for much smaller estates to be built. The Whites scheme consisted of an extension to an existing 14-storey block, but the new buildings were grouped in seven low-rise blocks of flats and maisonettes with more landscaping than the previous schemes

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a momentous occasion at the Aylesbury Estate in Walworth, Southwark, Greater London. The image showcases a panoramic view of low-rise blocks of flats and maisonettes during the topping out ceremony of the Southwark Whites contract. The Southwark Whites contract was an important project undertaken by Laings South London Region. As stated in an article published in Laings monthly newsletter Team Spirit in October 1976, this site marked the final housing development to be constructed by Laing as part of the decade-long redevelopment plan for the Aylesbury Estate. It also represented a shift away from larger-scale developments, as it was one of the last projects to utilize the 12M Jespersen scheme due to factory closures and changing trends. The Whites scheme consisted of seven low-rise blocks that were thoughtfully designed with ample landscaping, distinguishing it from previous schemes on the estate. This photograph not only captures architectural elements but also provides insight into urban living and landscape design during this era. With its striking composition and historical significance, this print serves as a testament to both past achievements in urban development and evolving architectural trends. It offers viewers a glimpse into 1970s architecture while showcasing how communities were shaped through thoughtful planning and design choices.
