EDITORS COMMENTS
This historic print captures the momentous occasion of the marriage certificate signing between Prince Albert, Duke of York, later King George VI (1895-1952), and Elizabeth Bowes Lyon, later Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother (1900-2002), at Westminster Abbey in London on 24th April 1923. The marriage certificate, an essential part of the matrimonial formalities, bears the signatures and autographs of the couple, their witnesses, and the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr. Cosmo Gordon Lang. The Duke and Duchess of York exchanged vows in a grand and formal ceremony, marking the beginning of their lifelong partnership and eventual reign. The sixth in line to the throne at the time, Albert's ascension to the throne in 1936 following the abdication of his brother, King Edward VIII, brought Elizabeth to the position of Queen Consort and eventually Queen Mother. This significant document is a testament to the enduring love and commitment shared by the royal couple and a reminder of the rich history of the British monarchy.
