Kaiser Wilhelm IIs sons
The six sons of Kaiser Wilhelm II pictured in 1900: (l to r standing) Eitel Friedrich (1883-1942), Crown Prince Wilhelm (1882-1951), Adalbert (1884-1948); (in front) Oskar (1888-1958), Joachim (1890-1920) and August Wilhelm (1887-1949), all dressed in military uniform. Each of the Kaisers sons were commissioned into the First Foot Guards on his tenth birthday and, at the age of twelve sent on to the military cadet school at Plon where a house had been purchased for them to segregate them from other pupils except those selected by their governor. The Kaiser abhorred the liberal education his parents had drawn up for him and set out to re-model German grammar schools on the cadet school model. He believed too much Classics was bad for boys and denied them a chance to develop strong national feelings. He urged more detailed study of Germany and German history, less classroom work and more physical activity. This regime ensured his sons grew up steeped in Prussian military tradition

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, Kaiser Wilhelm II's six sons, dressed in military uniform and standing in a line, are captured in 1900. From left to right, the boys are Eitel Friedrich (b. 1883), Crown Prince Wilhelm (b. 1882), Adalbert (b. 1884), Oskar (b. 1888), Joachim (b. 1890), and August Wilhelm (b. 1887). The Kaiser's sons were all commissioned into the First Foot Guards on their tenth birthdays and, at the age of twelve, were sent to the military cadet school at Plon. The Kaiser, who abhorred the liberal education his own parents had provided him, sought to re-model German grammar schools on the cadet school model. He believed that too much Classics and a lack of physical activity were detrimental to young boys, and instead urged a more detailed study of Germany and German history. This regime ensured that Wilhelm II's sons grew up steeped in Prussian military tradition. The photograph captures the boys' youthful energy and discipline, reflecting the rigorous training they received at Plon. The Kaiser's influence is evident in their uniforms and posture, a testament to the impact of his educational philosophy on the next generation of German leadership. The image is a poignant reminder of a bygone era, when the monarchy held significant power and influence over the education and upbringing of the ruling class. It also serves as a reminder of the importance of tradition and discipline in shaping the future leaders of a nation.
