EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored steel engraving, created by Pfitzer after an illustration by A. Carie-Baron for Felix-Edouard Guerin-Meneville's Dictionnaire Pittoresque d'Histoire Naturelle (Picturesque Dictionary of Natural History), published in Paris between 1834 and 1839, showcases a captivating tableau of three distinct species of fauna native to various regions of the world. At the forefront of the image, a Grey-winged Francolin (Scleroptila afra), a ground-dwelling bird native to Africa, is depicted with its plumage of grey-brown feathers, speckled with white and black. Its alert posture and keen gaze convey a sense of readiness, as if poised to dart away at the slightest provocation. In the upper left corner, a Great Frigatebird (Fregata minor) soars gracefully through the sky, its wings outstretched and its distinctive red gular pouch inflated, an adaptation used to attract mates. This magnificent seabird is native to tropical and subtropical regions of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. The vibrant red frangipani (Plumeria rubra) takes center stage in the lower right corner, its delicate petals unfurling to reveal their intoxicating beauty. Native to Central America, Mexico, and the Caribbean, this iconic flower is a symbol of fragility and strength, a reminder of the delicate balance of nature that exists within our world. Together, these three elements create a stunning visual representation of the diverse and intricate web of life that exists within the natural world, captured in meticulous detail by the skilled hands of Pfitzer and Carie-Baron.
