An 8st killer snake was let loose at Kirkburton CofE Primary School
An 8st killer snake was let loose at Kirkburton CofE Primary School... and children stroked it. Hector, a 20ft-long python, visited children taking part in the Summer Safari scheme organised by Kirklees Countryside Services. The youngsters were able to stroke Hector, being held here by safari helper Gary Lawford, and later the python was let loose in the schools grounds. Said Colne Valley Countryside Project Officer Mr Mike O Roarke: " Pythons are capable to killing humans if the are annoyed. But Hector is very timid and perfectly safe if handled by experts. The idea was to give youngsters some awareness of wildlife and the scheme has included playing games and activities connected with wild animals and safari" Hector is owned by a Penistone colleague of Mr O Roarke. 3rd August 1988

EDITORS COMMENTS
An unforgettable encounter with nature! In this photo print, we see the fearless children of Kirkburton CofE Primary School getting up close and personal with an extraordinary visitor. Meet Hector, a magnificent 20ft-long python who made a special appearance at the school's Summer Safari scheme, organized by Kirklees Countryside Services. As captured in this snapshot, young explorers were given the unique opportunity to stroke Hector under the watchful eye of safari helper Gary Lawford. Later on, their excitement reached new heights as they witnessed the gentle giant slithering through their very own school grounds. While some may shudder at the thought of encountering such a large snake, Colne Valley Countryside Project Officer Mr Mike O Roarke assures us that Hector is nothing to fear. Although pythons possess incredible strength and have been known to harm humans when provoked, our scaly friend here is incredibly timid and completely safe when handled by experts. This thrilling experience aimed to instill a sense of wildlife awareness among these curious minds. The Summer Safari scheme included engaging games and activities centered around wild animals and safari adventures. It comes as no surprise that this unforgettable encounter left an indelible mark on both children and adults alike. Hector proudly belongs to a Penistone colleague of Mr O Roarke's, reminding us all that sometimes even our wildest dreams can become reality.
