Denis Papin and Robert Boyle, engraving
Denis Papin and Robert Boyle. Engraving of the French scientist Denis Papin (1647- 1712), and Irish chemist Robert Boyle (1627- 91), discussing their experiments using air pumps in 1675. Air pumps had been invented by Otto von Guericke in the late 1640s. Boyle (right) heard of this discovery in 1657 and devised an improved pump with the help of Robert Hooke. Boyle was introduced to the work of Papin by Leibniz. Papin had worked on air pumps under Huygens in Paris and moved to London, UK, in 1675. He assisted Boyle with his air pump experiments during 1676-1679. Papin invented the double-acting air pump

EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving captures the historic meeting of two brilliant minds, Denis Papin and Robert Boyle, as they engage in a deep discussion about their groundbreaking experiments with air pumps. Created in 1675, this colored illustration showcases the pioneering work of these European inventors and scientists. On the right side stands Robert Boyle, an Irish chemist renowned for his contributions to modern chemistry. Inspired by Otto von Guericke's invention of air pumps in the late 1640s, Boyle collaborated with Robert Hooke to develop an improved version. It was through Gottfried Leibniz that Boyle became acquainted with Denis Papin's work on air pumps during his time in Paris under Christiaan Huygens. Denis Papin, a French scientist who later relocated to London, UK, played a pivotal role in assisting Boyle with his air pump experiments from 1676 to 1679. Notably, Papin invented the double-acting air pump which further advanced their research into vacuums and physics. In this historical artwork filled with intricate details and vibrant colors, we witness these two great minds engrossed in conversation within a laboratory setting. Their collaboration symbolizes the spirit of scientific inquiry and innovation that defined the 17th century. This remarkable print serves as a testament to their significant contributions to science and technology while highlighting their shared passion for pushing boundaries and expanding our understanding of the physical world.
