Her First and Last Voyage: the Titanic Passing up the Solent on Wednesday, April 10th
Her First and Last Voyage: the Titanic Passing up the Solent on Wednesday, April 10th on her Departure from Southampton, (April 20), 1912. The ship on her maiden, and last, voyage. The White Star Line ship RMS Titanic struck an iceberg in thick fog off Newfoundland on 14 April 1912. She was the largest and most luxurious ocean liner of her time, and thought to be unsinkable. In the collision, five of her watertight compartments were compromised and she sank. Out of the 2228 people on board, only 705 survived. A major cause of the loss of life was the insufficient number of lifeboats she carried. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a historic moment in time - the RMS Titanic passing up the Solent on Wednesday, April 10th, 1912. Little did anyone know that this would be both her first and last voyage. The Titanic, belonging to the prestigious White Star Line, was hailed as the largest and most luxurious ocean liner of its era. With an air of invincibility surrounding her, she embarked on what was meant to be a triumphant maiden journey. Tragically, fate had other plans for this magnificent vessel. On April 14th, while navigating through thick fog off Newfoundland, disaster struck when the Titanic collided with an iceberg. Despite being equipped with watertight compartments designed to prevent sinking, five were compromised during impact. The aftermath of this catastrophic event is etched into history as one of humanity's greatest maritime tragedies. Out of the 2228 souls aboard that fateful night, only 705 managed to survive. One major contributing factor to such devastating loss of life was the insufficient number of lifeboats carried by the ship. This poignant image serves as a reminder not only of the grandeur and opulence that once graced these decks but also highlights the fragility and vulnerability inherent in human endeavors. It stands as a testament to those who perished onboard - forever immortalized within these monochrome frames - their stories forever intertwined with that ill-fated voyage across Southampton's waters towards destiny's cruel embrace.
