Director of the International Ballet of the Marquis de Cuevas Mr. Larrain talking to Rudolf Nureyev

Director of the International Ballet of the Marquis de Cuevas Mr. Larrain (L) talks 22 June 1961 with Soviet born ballet dancer Rudolf Nureyev at the Theatre des Champs Elyses in Paris where he will perform with the troop. Nureyev studied at the Leningrad Choreographic School, and became a soloist with the Kirov Ballet. While touring with the Ballet in 1961, he obtained political asylum in Paris. Nureyevs virtuosity and expressiveness made him one of the greatest male dancers of the 1960 s, in both classical and modern ballets. EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, we witness a historic encounter between two influential figures in the world of ballet. The image captures Mr. Larrain, the esteemed Director of the International Ballet of the Marquis de Cuevas, engaged in conversation with none other than Rudolf Nureyev, an iconic Soviet-born ballet dancer. Taken on 22 June 1961 at the Theatre des Champs Elysees in Paris, where Nureyev was set to perform with Larrain's troop, this momentous meeting symbolizes a fusion of talent and artistry. Nureyev's journey from studying at the prestigious Leningrad Choreographic School to becoming a soloist with the renowned Kirov Ballet is well-documented. However, it was during his tour with the Ballet that year that he made a daring decision – obtaining political asylum in Paris. Nureyev's extraordinary virtuosity and expressive performances solidified his status as one of the greatest male dancers not only in classical but also modern ballets throughout the 1960s. His magnetic presence on stage captivated audiences worldwide. Little did anyone know at that time that Nureyev would go on to become ballet director of the Paris Opera in 1983, leaving an indelible mark on both classical and contemporary dance forms. This AFP photo serves as a testament to their shared passion for dance and represents an unforgettable moment when two legends converged under one roof – forever etched into history
