This 07 December 1972 NASA file image obtained 06 December, 2002 shows a view of the Earth as seen by the Apollo 17 crew, Eugene A. Cernan, Ronald E. Evans, and Harrison H. Schmidt as they traveled toward the moon. The view extends from the Mediterranean Sea area to the Antarctica south polar ice cap. This was the first time the Apollo trajectory made it possible to photograph the south polar ice cap. Note the heavy cloud cover in the southern hemisphere. Us-Space-Apollo 13-Moon
A NASA picture shows a partial view of the Moon from inside the Apollo 13 lunar module in April 1970. The third Apollo manned mission to the Moon launched on April 11, 1970 was cancelled due to onboard explosion. The crew had to leave the command module and climb into the LEM (Lunar Exploration Module). The three astronauts used primitive celestial navigation techniques to determine where they were and how to get back to earth. Despite continued peril, their calculations worked and on 17 April 1970 Apollo XIII splashed down safely in the Pacific Ocean with all occupants intact. Astronauts James A. Lovell, Jr., John L. Swigert and Fred W. Haise, Jr. were rescued in good condition after command module Odyssey splashed down safely in the Pacific. / AFP PHOTO / NASA

SpaceX propels cargo to space station, lands rocket
The SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket lifts off from space launch complex 40 at Cape Canaveral, Florida with a Dragon CRS9 spacecraft on July 18, 2016.
A SpaceX rocket blasted off July 18 toward the International Space Station, carrying a load of supplies for the astronauts living in space, including equipment to enable future spaceships to park at the orbiting outpost. "Falcon 9 is on its way," said a commentator at SpaceX mission control as the white rocket launched under a dark night sky from Cape Canaveral, Florida at 12:45 am (0445 GMT).
