Us-Space-Apollo 13-Moon

A NASA picture shows a partial view of the Moon from inside the Apollo 13 lunar module in April 1970. The third Apollo manned mission to the Moon launched on April 11, 1970 was cancelled due to onboard explosion. The crew had to leave the command module and climb into the LEM (Lunar Exploration Module). The three astronauts used primitive celestial navigation techniques to determine where they were and how to get back to earth. Despite continued peril, their calculations worked and on 17 April 1970 Apollo XIII splashed down safely in the Pacific Ocean with all occupants intact. Astronauts James A. Lovell, Jr. John L. Swigert and Fred W. Haise, Jr. were rescued in good condition after command module Odyssey splashed down safely in the Pacific. / AFP PHOTO / NASA

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a remarkable moment in space history. Taken by NASA during the ill-fated Apollo 13 mission in April 1970, it offers a partial view of the Moon from inside the lunar module. What was supposed to be the third manned mission to land on the Moon turned into a desperate struggle for survival after an onboard explosion forced the crew to abandon their command module and seek refuge in the Lunar Exploration Module (LEM). In this image, we witness three brave astronauts - James A. Lovell Jr. , John L. Swigert, and Fred W. Haise Jr. - who found themselves stranded far from home with limited resources at their disposal. Undeterred by adversity, they relied on primitive celestial navigation techniques to determine their location and chart a course back to Earth. Their calculations proved successful against all odds, leading to their safe return on April 17th when Apollo 13 splashed down intact in the Pacific Ocean. The resilience and ingenuity displayed by these courageous individuals serve as a testament to human determination and our unwavering spirit of exploration. As we gaze upon this awe-inspiring photograph, let us remember not only the peril faced by these astronauts but also celebrate their triumphant journey back home – an extraordinary feat that continues to inspire generations fascinated by space exploration and mankind's indomitable quest for knowledge beyond our planet's boundaries.
