This 07 December 1972 NASA file image obtained 06 December, 2002 shows a view of the Earth as seen by the Apollo 17 crew, Eugene A. Cernan, Ronald E. Evans, and Harrison H. Schmidt as they traveled toward the moon. The view extends from the Mediterranean Sea area to the Antarctica south polar ice cap. This was the first time the Apollo trajectory made it possible to photograph the south polar ice cap. Note the heavy cloud cover in the southern hemisphere. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in history - the 30th anniversary of the iconic Earth image taken by Apollo 17 on December 7,1972. Astronauts Eugene A. Cernan, Ronald E. Evans, and Harrison H. Schmidt embarked on their journey towards the moon, providing us with this awe-inspiring view of our planet from space. The photograph showcases an expansive perspective extending from the Mediterranean Sea area to the vastness of Antarctica's south polar ice cap. It is worth noting that this was the first time such a trajectory allowed for capturing imagery of the southern hemisphere's heavy cloud cover and even more remarkably, the south polar ice cap itself. As we reflect upon this remarkable image three decades later, it serves as a reminder of humanity's incredible achievements in astronautics and exploration beyond our home planet. Moreover, it prompts us to contemplate pressing global issues like climate change and melting glaciers depicted in this photograph. This extraordinary visual representation offers profound insights into our world's fragility while simultaneously inspiring us to protect its precious resources for future generations. With NASA at its helm, this timeless image continues to captivate audiences worldwide as a testament to human ingenuity and curiosity about what lies beyond our earthly boundaries.
