EDITORS COMMENTS
This beautifully colored engraving depicts Saint Aloysius Gonzaga (1568-1591), an Italian Jesuit seminarian and student at the Roman College. Born into a noble family, Aloysius showed an early inclination towards a religious life and joined the Society of Jesus at the age of 18. Known for his deep faith, piety, and devotion to the sick and the poor, Aloysius served as a caregiver during the great plague epidemic in Rome in 1591. He contracted the disease while caring for the afflicted and died at the age of 23. Beatified in 1605 and canonized in 1726, Saint Aloysius Gonzaga is depicted here in his Jesuit attire, wearing a cassock and surplice, with a cross and crucifix in hand. The aura or halo around his head signifies his sainthood, and the white vestment symbolizes his purity and innocence. The altar and liturgical elements in the background further emphasize the religious context of the image. This engraving, created during the modern age, is a testament to the enduring legacy of Saint Aloysius Gonzaga and his unwavering commitment to serving Christ and the sick. The image invites us to reflect on the importance of faith, prayer, and selflessness in our own lives, and to remember the saints as role models and intercessors in our spiritual journey.
